A Global Movement For Change

25 June 2012
This week, world leaders gather for a momentous occasion — the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro. Will it be a success? In my opinion, yes. To be sure, the negotiations have been lengthy. Even now there is more disagreement than agreement on the details of the so-called “outcome document” that will emerge. Yet that will not be the defining measure. Far more important is what the Rio conference has already accomplished. And that is to build a global movement for change.

The PSC celebrates the Venus Transit

06 June 2012
On Wednesday, 6 June 2012, the world celebrated a rare phenomenon known as the Venus transit. During this transit, Venus is seen as a black dot moving slowly across the Sun’s disk. Venus transits occur in pairs of events separated by about eight years, and these pairs recur every 105.5 or 121.5 years. The reason for the rarity of Venus transits is that the plane of Venus’ orbit is tilted at a small angle to Earth’s orbital plane.

The GLOBE at Night program is an international citizen-science campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure their night sky brightness and submit their observations to a website from a computer or smart phone. Light pollution threatens not only our “right to starlight”, but can affect energy consumption, wildlife and health. The GLOBE at Night campaign has run for two weeks each winter/spring for the last six years. People in 115 countries have contributed 66,000 measurements, making GLOBE at Night one of the most successful light pollution awareness campaigns.
