Biography:
Musa Abubakar Kana MD (Kaduna State University, Nigeria) is a perinatal and pediatric epidemiologist as well as collaborator of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina-Serageldin Research Methods Library. He is an early career scientist that benefitted from research resources available in the developed world. Dr. Kana appreciates the significance of making these resources assessable to young scholars based in resource constraint countries.
"Statistical training and statistical literacy in Africa"
Dr. Kana’s presentation aims to outline the status of statistical literacy and measures for escalating statistical training in Africa. Presently, most statistical training programmers in the continent are institution based with structured courses in science oriented postgraduate syllabus. However, the shortage of statistics teachers based in Africa is a challenge to accessibility, coverage and quality of statistical training for young scholars. Therefore, I propose a model to improve statistics malnutrition by targeting our network of 54,000 African faculty members to transmit statistics knowledge and skills using resources of the Serageldin Research Methods Library. This includes power-point lectures that can be used by classroom teachers to teach their students. There is also the Euclid's statistical matrix, which is a multilingual dashboard with YouTube courses and eBooks designed to assist in the teaching and learning of the basics of statistics.
