"How data and analytical research is advancing the women’s empowerment agenda"

Women’s equality and empowerment were traditionally seen as realms of culture, religion, and social norms that did not lend themselves to quantitative analyses. But, the last 10-15 years have witnessed an emergence of new methodologies and better data that help to estimate the cost of wide-ranging dimensions of gender inequality: from access to education and health, to infrastructure, violence, conflict, climate change, access to jobs and political leadership, among others. This growing evidence-based literature is convincing policymakers to be more decisive in tackling centuries-long barriers that marginalized half the population. Though a promising start, far more is needed.
