Very few adverse
effects are associated with exercise and physical activity. However,
abnormal cardiac, hemotological and metabolic conditions have been linked to
participation in exercise. The most common adverse effects of activity are
musculoskeletal injuries and the resulting potential for the development of
traumatic osteoarthritis.
In light of the national physical activity recommendations, there is a
need for more information on these potential adverse effects so the public
can be advised on the safest forms of physical activity to improve health.
