Surveillance is good for identifying epidemics, but typically
miss 10-90% of the cases. It is impossible to measure the
frequency of cancer or heart disease as these may only change
10% per year. Thus cancer, diabetes, MI registries have been
established with high ascertainment. Registries involve the active surveillance. Thus a nurse may go to all the hospitals in an area to identify serious injuries or cancer patients. This is a must more accurate, but much more costly system. The file of data concerning all cases of a particular disease or other health-relevant condition in a defined population such that the cases can be related to a population base. |
