Rheumatic fever is viewed as both a classic infectious disease and
autoimmune disease. Epidemiology has developed from infectious
disease epidemiology to chronic disease epidemiology. Molecular
epidemiology is exciting but perhaps the shoe leather epidemiology
of early infectious disease epidemiology could be of benefit to
all autoimmune disease.
