As illustrated, Caucasian individuals in Allegheny County,
PA who carry two DQ susceptibility haplotypes (DQA1*R - DQB1*ND alleles)
have a fifteen-fold increase in their
risk
of type 1 diabetes than
those who do not carry any susceptibility haplotypes. A dose-response
relationship is observed with one susceptibility haplotype. In terms of
absolute risk through age 30 years, susceptible homozygotes have a 2.5 %
risk of developing diabetes. As the population level, these markers
contribute to approximately 75% of the type 1 diabetes that is observed
in the county.
