One additional entrapment was due to the bedframe alone
rather than the side-rail. Of the 97 events with dates, 78 (80%) occurred after January 1, 1992. The cause of death was reported for 38 of the 72 fatalities. The cause of 32 was asphyxiation, strangulation, or suffocation. The others died of cardiac arrest, arrhythmias, or pneumonia. Of the 26 injuries reported, there were respiratory or circulatory compromise (12), skin or soft tissue injury (8), and fractures and sprains (5). The 13 entrapments that had no adverse effects were due to the fact that staff intervened. |
