Indirect adjustment of rates is based on applying the age-specific rates of a standard population to the populations of interest to determine the number of “expected” deaths for each community. This is compared to the “observed” number of deaths to produce a standardized mortality ratio. An example of the formula for standardized mortality ratios is shown in slide 20. An example of the indirect method of adjusting rates is illustrated in slides 21 and 22. |
