You know what
they say that those who dont know history are doomed to repeat it. This lecture
seeks to summarize the lessons History would teach those who are willing to listen and
learn. Believe it or not, Epidemiology did affect the evolution of disease. By
identifying and quantifying disease, scientists were able to institute measures that
controlled the spread of disease, infectious diseases in particular. When infectious
disease no longer caused premature deaths among the population, people began to live long
enough to develop chronic diseases. Today, chronic diseases have become the major killers
of people living in industrialized nations.
