These defenseless cabritos are promptly infected, since they cannot recognize PLD and the other bacterial proteins that they were exposed to as fetuses. They do not have antitoxin for the simple reason that their dams have toxin overriding their antibody production. Due to the prompt infection of newborns, PLD accumulates to kill many or even all in a herd by demyelination.
