Now, it’s the opportunity to
use these powerful technologies in this important area of the placebo as it relates to
mind-brain communications that led 17 institutes and centers and health agencies of the
federal government in November 2000 to host a two and a half day workshop on the placebo.
It led to a book published this past week by British Medical Journal press, edited by
Harry Guess, Arthur Kleinman, our colleague John Kusek from NIDDK, and my colleague, Linda
Engel, from NCCAM. But more importantly, it led to the issuance of RFAs that is on the
street and we are currently scheduled to receive applications that will be funded by ten
institutes to study the basic mechanisms underlying placebo effect, as well as how the
placebo effect arises in the context of clinical practice. |
