Evidence-based practice began
its life in healthcare as evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based medicine is based on the
concept of shifting healthcare away from basing decisions on opinion and past practices.
Research has shown that physicians failed to recommend medications up to ten years after
they have been shown to be efficacious and continue to recommend treatments up to ten
