Brazilian
leadership gives room for optimism in the practical eradication of house-loving
triatomids. Cardiopathy is likely to be the main cost for PH hospitals. The Southern Cone
experience shows that eradication efforts are more than paid for by reduced cardiology
costs. Nonetheless, if some city has few Chagas infections, it may have almost no relevant
cardiac cases, except imported ones. The main
conclusion is that it is not the biology of T. cruzi but its economics that is
truly the most important issue for human welfare. Regardless, perserverence is the keynote
for disease reduction. Worldwide, when the case is rural and not really accountable, the
industrial workers with money may not wish to see their tax dollars going to the reduction
of tropical diseases. Think about it !
