Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP), a non-profit organization, has adopted Dharavi slum (shantytown) with an estimated 400,000 population in Central Mumbai. Leprosy Control work was initiated by BLP in 1979. The first Leprosy Eradication campaign was taken up in this slum through 2000 volunteers consisting medical students, nurses and other paramedical personals. Intensive work to identify cases and treat them with MDT over more than 2 decades resulted in significant fall in leprosy transmission. Still, the slum is facing a problem of immigrants who are maintaining low level of infection (Ganapati R, Revankar CR, Bulchand HO and Kingsley S, Leprosy Review, 1999)
