return to n by reduction and segregation. Meiosis can be defined by its reduction
division. You must be careful how you use terms some of which are synonyms. Gametic
meiosis has the reduction of the somatic 2n state to gametes of n or half. Zygotic
meiosis has the reduction of the doubled karyosome (2n) to the somatic state of n.
When as in Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia no sexual cycle exists,
whether they are diplonts or haplonts is obviously irrelevant. These 2 genera belong to
Eimeriidae and the choice of synonyms might run as: The zygote (karyosome) produces
sporoblasts which in their own membranes create 2, 4, 8 or even 16 sporozoites. Is
meront = sporoblast? Is sporozoite = merozoite? |
