Diesel exhaust being a very complex mixture of different pollutants in both phases (gases and particulates) a simple approach (like with a single well identified pollutant) is not possible and surrogates of such a mixture have to be found. The first ones which were used are described here. Nicotine has been recommended with respirable dust to take into account the usual confounding factor « tobacco smoke ». Total carbon has been thought to be interesting since it take into account the organic compounds and the elemental carbon. |
