4. Colonic compensation by production of Short
Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA)
- Up to 75 % of lactose passes unabsorbed through the small intestine
toward the cecum and colon in individuals with lactase deficiency
- Colonic microflora convert lactose to SCFA and hydrogen gas
- SCFA are absorbed by the colonic mucosa, thereby salvaging the
malabsorbed lactose for energy utilization
Reduced levels of, which can occur following antibiotic use, will also be
associated with increased symptoms following lactose ingestion, especially
in a lactase-deficient individual. |
