One of the biggest
concerns about fear of falling is that it leads some people to restrict
their activities. Activity restriction is thought to lead to functional
decline. This figure depicts a downward spiral of functioning. Activity
restriction is thought to be particularly harmful because it may lead to
deconditioning. Because of the reduced physical capabilities, seniors may
restrict more and more activities, leading to reduced function and decreased
independence. As clinicians, the aspect of activity performance is
necessary to examine in people that have a fear of falling.
