An increase of the death rate for mobile home residents in
tornadoes was dramatically apparent in the Oklahoma City tornado. Eleven of
the deaths occurred in mobile homes, but less than 100 mobile homes were
damaged by the tornado, in comparison with several thousand permanent homes.
Specific figures for the number of people in each kind of housing are not
available for the damaged structures, but a conservative estimate is that
the death rate in mobile homes was more than one person per 10 units while
the death rate in permanent homes was less than one person per 200 units.
Thus, the risk to mobile home residents was at least 20 times as great as
the risk to permanent home residents in the Oklahoma City tornado.
