This slide shows an example of how a local public health department (lphd) might be organized to deliver services. Traditionally, public health departments provide environmental health services, maternal and child health services and communicable diseases. Because the leading causes of death include chronic diseases, contemporary lphd’s might include a department to address chronic illnesses and injuries. A lphd may also provide emergency medical services as well.

Larger public health departments may have an epidemiologist and/or biostatisticians on staff.
