Overwintering adults produce eggs in the Spring and the larvae feed primarily on white-footed and other mice during the summer. They molt into nymphs the following Spring and feed on larger animals in the woods and grasslands. This is the primary stage that transmits the Lyme disease pathogen to man, following a feeding period of 48 hours or more. Adults feed on deer and other larger mammals.
