Taking exercise is
related to social class, there is a cachet attached to membership of the Gym
or Sports Club.
Working class girls..and boys take little formal exercise, rarely participate in sports or have active physical hobbies once they have left school. They are more likely to be spectators than participants. Rather like reading to your children makes them want to read for themselves, parents walking, cycling, swimming and being involved with their children in physical adventures creates in the children a habit of and an enjoyment of exercise. Advertising of sports gear, track suits, trainers and the example of prominent sporting heroes can be important in encouraging and enthusing. The power of the advertiser and the ability to create a market is formidable. Taking exercise has to be "the easy option",has to be seen to "fashionable". In Britain in the 1950’s the "Hula-hoop craze" was a great way to get people exercising for fun-skateboards, roller - skates, rock and roll all have their place. |
