The father of Medicine,
Hippocrates (460-377 BC), wrote about paralysis associated with consumption of peas. Cultivation of the grass pea was banned by edicts in Germany and Italy in the 16th and 17 th century. Major epidemic occur during the Spanish civil war (1936-39) Grass pea was used as food in Nazi forced camps during the second world war in Europe. An epidemic occurred among Rumanian Jewish prisoners in Ukraine. |
