For studying
pregnancy and childbirth, we can access the following data sources: 1) births register: as a statutory data set (compulsory notification) it is updated regularly and it contains demographic information that may not be available from other sources, such as ethnicity and age of parents, indigenous status, etc. Access via the office of births and deaths, but also via organisations who already have an arrangement and confidentiality agreement. 2) Perinatal data: collected at hospitals or other birth centres by nurses and midwives. Items include details of the pregnancy and birth including birth defects, as well as some medical history of the mother during pregnancy. Access by health institutions who have an agreement to handle individual records. 3)Inpatients data: covers demographics, cause of admission, other diagnoses and procedures performed, length of stay, discharge status, insurance status, etc. Only Health Departments (Ministry of Health) and authorised government institutions (national research centres) have access to de-identified data. 4) Census data: available to all institutions purchasing it: de-identified and contains socio-demographic information for all residents at the time of census. Updated every five years. Intercensal population estimates projected for all other years. |
