While for many years alcoholism
treatment approaches relied almost exclusively on behavioral
therapy, efforts to develop medications for alcohol use disorders
have expanded rapidly in recent years. Three agents are now approved
for use in the United States and many other countries. As is the
case with medications for other chronic diseases, these medications
have been found to be highly effective with some patients but others
have failed to respond to them.
