In 1994 though, women’s health advocates pushed
for the inclusion of a reproductive health agenda beyond family planning at
a UN sponsored International Conference on Population Development. Whereas the former two meetings focused solely on family planning, the report from this third meeting advocated a more holistic approach, in which reproductive health was defined as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Specifically, the Program of Action advocated: Safe sex; The Capability to reproduce and the freedom to make reproductive decisions; And Education and access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable family planning; Lastly, it also stated that enhanced personal relations, outside of reproductive and STD care, is a part of reproductive health. |
