Massive deforestation of the matorral and
clearcutting forests particularly in the 1970s has created new deserts and
flash flooding, influenced by short distances from the mountains to the sea.
Of course, the major natural selection is for heat resistance (Cushman &
Borland, 2000), and all changed environments are thereby new ones. Guaymas
is a brilliant exposition of how the changing niche can modify its floral
contents. It is a secondary center of origin with tiny leaves readily
mapable phenotypically.
