This section provides some excerpted analyses from the MCHP report;
in particular, some of the results of the analyses with diabetes
case definitions are presented.
Diabetes, as a disease, may be particularly amenable to case
ascertainment using administrative data.
Often, those diagnosed with the disease have prolonged and
intensive encounters with the health care system.
As well, prescriptions (i.e., insulin) are specific to
disease treatment. It is
important to note that cases of Type I and Type II diabetes may not
be easily distinguished when using administrative databases,
particularly in data coded using ICD-9.
