Moscow is the
leading center of HIV infections in Russia (Pokrovsky, 1999). The Russian Federation
Ministry of Health, Center for Preventive Measures and Combating AIDS, reported that as of
June 30, 1999, the number of people infected with the HIV virus in Russia was 4,867 as
compared to 1,867 in 1998, over one-half of new cases were in the Moscow region: 27%
(2247) in the city and 27% (1838) in the oblast. A total of 15,819 HIV-positive persons
have been officially registered in Russia, of whom 3.3% are children and 74.9% are men,
young drug addicts between the ages of 17 and 23. (Moskovskiy Komsomolets, 1999). |
