Stress
Stressful events, those of everyday living such as running late or being stuck in a
traffic jam, can have serious health consequences. Because these issues can occur
routinely in our lives, the repetition of the stress reaction in our bodies can have a
serious impact on our health. When faced with stress, the brain sends a signal that
releases stress hormones throughout our bodies. Researchers are now studying the effects
of continued release of these adrenaline producing compounds, on the rest of the body. It
is well known that high stress lifestyle can contribute to risk of heart disease. Now
experts think that it may potentially effect memory and even shrink the brain.
Recommendations for decreasing stress in your life include:
- Simplify your life as much as possible
- Don’t over-schedule your time. Too much to do can cause a constant feeling of
being overwhelmed.
- Schedule some ‘free time” each day to just sit and think. Free thought can
clear your mind and re-nourish your creative energy
- Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep.
- Network with friends and develop social support
