Cases were consecutive patients diagnosed with idiopathic sudden deafness between October 1996 and August 1998 at 17 collaborating hospitals throughout Japan, and who had an audiogram within 14 days of onset of this condition. Of the 171 eligible patients, 164 were included as cases in this study.
