The first question is,
is there evidence of oxidative stress in preeclampsia? There’s abundant evidence. There
are lipid markers, activated blood cells; there are antibodies to oxidized LDL. There are
changes in tissue where nitrotyrosine, which is a product of nitric oxide plus the super
oxide, nitrate, and then nitrocelating proteins is increased. The work that’s been done
by Carl et al. has showed some very exciting information. If you take ascorbic acid, which
is a reducing agent, and you put it in the blood of preeclamptic women, it disappears,
it’s oxidized. There’s a lot of evidence that there is in fact oxidative stress. |
