Driving a Sustainable Future: TWAS-AREP Hybrid Workshop "Pathways to Green Transition in the Arab Region "

The TWAS Arab Regional Partner (TWAS-AREP) and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) successfully organized a hybrid workshop titled "Pathways to Green Transition in the Arab Region" from September 23–24, 2025.

Held under the Young Scientists Training Program, the event aimed to build the capacities of the Arab young scientists, and provide them with the needed skills to advance their career and achieve their professional goals.

During his talk Prof. Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and TWAS-AREP coordinator emphasized through his opening speech that “Green transformation is no longer an option but a necessity to protect our environmental security" especially given the severe challenges the Arab region faces from climate change, including temperature fluctuations and strained water resources.

The workshop served as a vital platform for Arab researchers from Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen, as well as various Egyptian institutions, to exchange insights.

Key discussions focused on:

  • Renewable Energy and Green Technology developments.

  • Cutting-edge research in water-use efficiency and waste management.

  • Advanced models for green transformation.

  • Strategies for adapting to climate change impacts and related human health topics.

Online Lecture: "Doing Better Science: Human Resilience and Vulnerability from Epigenetics Perspective"

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), through the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), affiliated to the Academic Research Sector, and The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries’ Arab Regional Partner (TWAS–AREP), organized a free online lecture titled “Doing Better Science: Human Resilience and Vulnerability from Epigenetics Perspective”; presented by Prof. Rana Dajani, Yidan Global Fellow at Harvard Graduate school of Education, and professor of molecular biology at the Hashemite University in Jordan, and moderated by Dr. Alya Arabi, Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAEU, on Monday, 20 October 2025.

The lecture discussed tackling epigenetics. As humans we have evolved and survived because of our curiosity and critical thinking. How do those traits shape our science, our lives, and our understanding of the world around us? Epigenetics, a new area of science, is the weaving of our genetics and environment in shaping who we are. The lecture explored the impact of trauma and war on our bodies, and what steps we can take to address these effects.
