Analysis of foreign land deals on local communities in 6 countries shows that the impact was mostly negative. In most cases local smallholder lost their land, while others lost their grazing areas, all without meaningful compensation. Promised benefits should be made explicit and evaluated.

This paper analyses the effect of the African National Congress (ANC) local organization at branch level on local democracy. Internal party politics, often dominated by elites, have a strong bearing on local elections, since the branch chairperson is often an automatic candidate as a councillor.
