Mercury and its compounds have been used by man in a wide
variety of ways. The largest users have been chlor-alkali
industry. The second greatest consumption of mercury occurs
in the production of electrical apparatus. WHO has warned against the use of alkylmercury compounds in seed dressing (WHO, 1976). Methylmercury compounds are still used in laboratory-based research, and so the possibility of occupational exposures remains (Junghans, 1983).
