A stong argument for the importance of genetic factors in the development of diabetes comes from concordance studies in identical twins. The concordance rate for Type 2 diabetes in older twins reaches 90% while that for Type 1 diabetes is about 50%. In both Type 2 and Type 1 diabetes, these rates are much higher than the concordance rates seen in non-identical (dizygous) twins or among siblings. |
