Mitigation strategies for tornadoes are primarily focused on
providing as early a warning as possible of an approaching tornado. The warning system
most widely used today is the issuance of tornado watches and tornado warnings by the
National Weather Service. A tornado watch is an advisory that the weather conditions are
conducive to the development of a tornado. A tornado warning is an advisory that an actual
tornado has been sighted. Early warning is important as it allows the public to seek
shelter in protected areas. Most often this will be the basement of a home, or a culvert
if driving along a road. Other information: All about Tornadoes Tornadoes...Nature's Most Violent Storms |
