One limitation of both of these designs is that exposure was defined at time of diagnosis; because of the long latency periods for most adult cancers (~15-25 years) this assumption is not valid unless subjects lived in the geographic areas for long periods of time, unless the putative carcinogens acted at a late stage in the development of disease. |
