Some children do
acquire a hearing impairment post-natally usually as a result of infection or trauma which
can occur at any age. The commonest cause is bacterial meningitis. Acquired impairments
account for approximately 7% of the population of hearing impaired children. Thus acquired impairment is only part of the explanation of the rise in prevalence over age. |
