Especially in developing countries, the prevalence of diabetes has
increased remarkably in the past 10 years. It has been estimated
that diabetes prevalence will increase 200% in developing countries,
i.e., China, India etc., soon after we enter the next millennium.
In China the prevalence of diabetes has increased from 0.67% (1980)
to 3.21% (1996), about 5 times after 15 years, and the number of
diabetic patients may exceed 16 million now, and more than 37
million by the year 2025, based on these trends.
