- HBsAg is hepatitis B virus surface antigen. A positive
screening test is followed up with a more sensitive and specific confirmatory test.
Hepatitis B is associated with liver disease. - Anti-HBc is antibody to the hepatitis B virus core antigen. This test is a surrogate marker for hepatitis B infection and can also be found in individuals with hepatitis C virus and HIV infection. - Anti-HCV is antibody to hepatitis C virus. A positive screening test is also followed up with a confirmatory test. Hepatitis C is associated with liver disease and liver cancer. This virus represents 80-90% of hepatitis previously classified as non-A, non-B. - Anti-HTLV I/II is a combination test for human T cell leukemia virus. A positive screening test is also followed up with a confirmatory test. HTLV is associated with adult T cell leukemia and tropical spastic paraparesis. - STS is a screening test for syphilis. This test is also followed up by a confirmatory test. There is debate about and research currently being conducted as to the usefulness of this test in the donor population. Anti-HIV 1/2 is a combination test for the antibody to human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2. |
