- At present, while hepatitis G virus (HGV) and TT virus
(TTV) are known to be transfusion transmitted and associated with chronic viremia, but
they are not associated with chronic disease. - There is substantial historical evidence that that the prion associated with Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (CJD) is not transfusion transmitted, or if it is, it doesnt cause disease. However, laboratory experiments have been conducted where transfusion transmission was demonstrated. It is important to note that these experiments were manipulated and not conducted in a way that duplicates the process of an actual transfusion. - While there appears to be an association between Kaposis sarcoma (KS) and human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8) and), it is unknown if the virus is transfusion transmitted and if so, if it is associated with development of KS. This is also true of the multiple sclerosis (MS) putatively associated retrovirus. |
