In health services research and epidemiology, the coordination of large administrative databases and the teamwork required pose significant issues of knowledge management issues. The challenge is three-fold:

1. Facilitate research continuity to ensure use of standard research methods and concepts to permit replication and extension of studies, while

2. maximizing efficient use of both human and capital resources, and

3. minimizing duplication of work by researchers and programmer analysts
