The phenotypic expression of HH can be influenced by environmental factors , that may increase the iron stores (i.e. aggravating factors such as diet with a high iron content or excessive alcohol consumption) or that may reduce the iron stores (i.e. protective factors such as regular blood donation or chronic bleeding). Moreover, other factors can modulate iron absorption such as vitamin C (which increases iron absorption) or tea (which reduces iron absorption).
