However, in Bandung
the mode of transmission might be attributable to the work place. Blue
collar workers usually work in crowded conditions and without good
ventilation systems. In this situation the transmission of the disease in
males is easier when a TB case occurs in the workforce.
This study showed that in both districts TB
cases mostly affected people in the productive age group of 16 – 50 years
old followed by the older age group of more than 50 years old. The
probability of developing tuberculous disease for people under 50 years old
increases from 2.5 times in Bandung to 4.8 times in TTS. This is in line
with MOH (2000) data that stated TB mostly affected people in their
productive age. A study by United States of Public Health Services (USPHS)
in 1970 found that children age 10 to 14 were relatively less vulnerable
while the age group of 15 to 44 the risk factors averaged 20 % (Isesman,
2000). |
