Memphis had 17,000 reported cases, with 5,000 fatalities, while New Orleans reported 27,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths. Similar reports came from Atlanta, St. Louis, and Louisville. Besides this terrible loss of life it was estimated that the nation lost circa $200,000,000 in economic costs directly associated with this epidemic.
