Spontaneous tented
villages are unplanned collections of tents. They usually – but not always -
are sited on level ground (perhaps where crops were grown earlier), and
rarely are placed with ease of delivery of services in mind. Drainage of
sites is usually the last consideration. Mostly, tented villages exist close
to distribution points for food and NFIs (non-food items like tents,
blankets, cooking sets, plastic sheets, buckets, tools and so on).
A number of spontaneous tented villages were ‘organised’ by NGOs but few
of those NGOs provided water supply or latrines and hygiene sets. Some of
those NGOs may have assumed the mantle of ‘Camp Managers’ as a means of
obtaining publicity. |
