Since emergency
latrines are normally always of the direct pit type, the disposal of
menstrual materials for young girls does not cause any undue problem.
However, when these latrines are upgraded to the more culturally suitable
indirect water seal type, such materials can cause blockages and should be
disposed of in bins for later disposal in pits for burning or burial. How
this is to be handled should be discussed with the school authorities since
they have to deal with the problem. In many areas, urinals for boys can
reduce the total number of latrines needed.
