Nearly 21 million American have either type 1 or type 2
diabetes, and the vast majority of these people have
type 2. Minority ethnic
groups such as African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and
Native Hawaiians are disproportionately affected by diabetes.
Almost
3 million
deaths worldwide were attributable to diabetes in 2000.
